Time – it’s the ultimate driver in all of our working lives. Whether you have to be somewhere on time or do something that takes time, there never seems to be enough of it to get everything done. In this blog post, we will look at some things that you can implement today to help you get more done in less time.
Focus Your Schedule
Before you even make it in to work, you should have a plan on how you will be spending your day. Of course, unexpected things are bound to happen. If you know what you have planned, you will be in a better position to make adjustments that will make the most efficient use of your time. The most common way this can be done is by writing up a to-do list. While each to-do list will have different tasks, you should rank your most urgent and impactful tasks at the top. And if there has been something at the bottom for quite some time, it might be time to bump it up in the order.
Break Your Day Up
By splitting your day into segments, the day’s work will seem much more manageable. For example, for your first two hours you can set some distinct goals or tasks you want to accomplish. This will give you the motivation to meet your deadlines as it’s much easier to see the end of a two-hour segment than an eight, ten or even twelve-hour shift. It is also important that after each of these segments that you take a short break to recharge and prepare yourself for the next one. This will go a long way in preventing burnout and getting yourself to consistently perform at your peak level.
Merge Tasks Together
The idea of multi-tasking is tricky one when discussing efficiency. There are times when multi-tasking is beneficial and other times when it can be a detriment to what you’re trying to get done. You must find out which tasks can be merged together and which ones should be done independently. For example, if something is running on automatic, whether it is a report or machine, this will allow you to get something else done while you’re waiting. However, for tasks that require full commitment it is crucial to focus on this task, as anything new that comes along will slow your productivity.
Give Yourself Less Time
Another way to get more done in less time is to give yourself less time. By putting pressure on yourself to finish a task on a deadline, you will work harder and smarter. You can also eliminate inefficiencies in the process. For example, if you wanted to get something done by the end of the day, make your aim more defined and set a specific time. If you’re driven by accomplishing goals, this is an excellent way to get your work done. However, it is important to keep in mind the balance of these goals with potentially unrealistic expectations and high stress levels. You’ll want to make sure you’re not too overwhelmed, otherwise it will defeat the purpose.
